SIGHTSEEING TOURS, EXCURSIONS IN CHERNIGOV, UKRAINE. CHERNIGIV(CHERNIHIV) TOURISM AND TRAVELS
Acquaintance with the past of Chernigov is better to start with the Val (Rampart) - former Chernigov detinets. It is the most ancient part of the city, its spiritual and administrative centre for many centuries. Not casually there is concentrated the greatest number of historical buildings and museums. Among them the special place occupies a majestic Spasskii cathedral – the most ancient of remained on Rus’. It has been founded in the early thirties of XI centuries by the first Chernigov prince Mstislav - the son of the Rus’ lands Baptist Vladimir Svjatoslavich.
Borisoglebskii cathedral is the creation of another lord of Chernigov, nowadays sainted by Orthodox Church, David Svjatoslavich. Built about 1123, the temple has been devoted heavenly patrons of family Yaroslavichi and has turned to an honorable tomb. Now the monument is a part of National architecturally-historical reserve "Chernigov ancient" and it is a museum.
In second half of XVII century from the northwest party of the Borisoglebskii cathedral which was then the main temple of the monastery with the same name, building of stone refectory was begun. Over it in 1700-1702 a bell-tower with John Bogoslov church was erected. In this monumental building known as Chernigov collegiums, the reserve management "Chernigov ancient" and some museum expositions among which special interest is represented by an exhibition of the Ukrainian icons now take place.
In the nineties XVII centuries in southwest part detinets, near a citadel, a beautiful stone house was constructed. Today it is known as "Mazepa's House". There is a legend, that the aged hetman has hid in it the young mistress - God daughter Motrya Kochubey, damned mother for vicious connection with the murderer of the father.
The territory of the modern Val for long time was the most strengthened part of Chernigov - its fortress. In the fortress it was safer, than behind its borders, therefore churches, and office buildings, apartment houses, and markets, even cemeteries settled down there. The palace of the archbishop constructed in 1780 (now in it the regional state archive takes places) has been remained till now. One of sights of the Val is 12 cast-iron guns. They were established here in the beginning of XX century. There is a legend that they have been presented to a city by Peter I as a sign of recognition of heroism of the Chernigov Cossacks shown in struggle against the Swedish conquerors.
Opposite to ancient guns on the high cape separated by a ravine from the Val, one of the most beautiful temples of Ukraine - Ekaterininskaya church is. It the first meets those who comes to the city on the Kiev highway. It by right is considered "card" of Chernigov. St. Ekaterina's church is constructed in 1715 by general obozniy of the Cossack army Yakov Efimovich Lizogub in memory of his grandfather of Chernigov colonel Yakov Lizogub and its fighting colleagues who excelled in 1696 during the capture of the considered unapproachable Turkish fortress Azov. Now in the church the exhibition of national-decorative Ukrainian art of the regional museum of V.V.Tarnovskogo takes places.
From the beginning of XIX century and till today the administrative and cultural centre of Chernigov is the Krasnaya ploschad' (Red square). To reach it from the Ekaterina's church is possible by the Avenue of Heroes decorated with fountains. On it monuments to those who have excelled in days of civil and Great Domestic soldier are established and also a monument to heroes-liquidators of disaster on the Chernobyl atomic power station. On the prospectus Mira that includes the Avenue of Heroes from both sides, till our time historical buildings have been remained.
There are two more architectural ensembles in Chernigov. These are ancient Yelets and Troitsko-Ilinsky monasteries. Their building is traditionally connected with the name of the father of Russian monkhood Saint Antonii Pechersky. During Old Russian times both monasteries were outside of the city fortification. Now their temples, the Yeletsko-Uspensky monastery and bell-towers define a historical panorama of Chernigov. They are well visible from the side of Desna flood-lands and Detinets.
In structure of closer to the city monastery the Uspensky cathedral erected in XII century, a bell-tower of 1670-1675, cells XVI-XVII of centuries, the Petropavlovskaya church of XVII century and a stone fencing enter. Besides on the territory of the monastery till our time the unique wooden construction of Cossack time - a small house of Feodosiy Uglitsky - the end of XVII century remains. Near to the Yelets monastery there are some more historical buildings. Among them the prison castle constructed in 1803-1806, and the two-storied building of the former man's school built in 1879. Here, opposite to a monastic fencing, the huge earthen embankment is. It is one of the most well-known Old Russian pagan barrows – “Chernaya mogila” (the Black tomb). According to the legend under it the founder of Chernigov the prince Chernyi (Black) is buried.
At first the monastery was cave, and then in first half of XII century one-head Ilinsky church has been erected. Near to it an input in well-known Antonievy caves is. In the structure of 350 meters complexes temples and other premises dug during the various historical periods from XII till XIX century are included.
Ilinsky church and caves today are a part of the National architecturally-historical reserve "Chernigov ancient" also they are accessible to tourists. During archeological excavations in monastery territory ancient caves and the rests of architectural constructions of different centuries have been founded. The museum exposition created in Ilinsky church tells about it.
