CITY OF CHERNIGOV, UKRAINE
Chernigov is an Old Slavic and Old Russian city. Today it is the regional, economic and cultural centre of the Chernigov area of Ukraine. Through the city lead a system of motorways of the international, state and regional value. Chernigov has two railway stations (passenger and cargo), three bus stations, and river port on the river Desna.
Chernigov is the most ancient historical centre of Left-bank Ukraine with the big historical and cultural potential. City foundation began about 1300 years ago. Chernigov quickly grew and developed and has shortly turned into the rich and well strengthened city which could compete to Kiev adequately. About it said in 907 year as the first written mention of Chernigov as about a big city which was the second after Kiev. Nowadays there are 11 higher educational institutions І-IV accreditation levels in the city.
Flag of Chernigov has been confirmed on June, 26 2008 by the Chernigov City Council. The flag represents a rectangular white panel in the centre of this panel the black one-head crowned eagle is located the left paw of the eagle holds a gold cross. The author of a flag is the honored worker of art of Ukraine - Boris Dedov. The flag displays historical epoch of development of a city since Cossack times and contains a basic element of the arms of Chernigov. The flag is used on all official city actions.
The coat of arms of Chernigov is represented with a silver stamp board with the black one-head eagle with specifically straightened wings one it. It’s proud the extended neck, highly lifted head, the beak with tongue symbolizes the all-conquering and vital beginning, force, triumph. Widely placed paws traditional for the image of the Chernigov eagle, supplement the general impression of force and courage. In the left paw of an eagle there is a gold cross which symbolizes spiritual bases, value and Christianity influence in a centuries-old life of the city, one of the most influential spiritual centers of Ukraine. The head of an eagle is crowned with a gold five-pointed (city) crown - a symbol of a city coat of arms. By quantity of outstanding architecturally-historical instructions Chernigov occupies one of the first places in a rating of cities of Ukraine. There are located 32 objects in the city territory which are included into the state register of national-cultural property and 39 instructions of town-planning and architecture of local value, a significant amount of monuments of culture, art, and archeology. In Chernigov there is third of monuments of pre-Mongolian the period which have remained in Ukraine. The city with its architecturally-archaeological monuments is in the list of the World heritage of UNESCO.
The city is located in east part of the Chernigov Polesye, on the right bank of the river Desna where its valley incorporates with Ljubech-Chernigov morenno-zandrovoy plain. Area climate is Atlantic-continental with short is moderate-soft winter and warm long summer.
The average quantity of precipitations of the warm period is 359 mm; of the cold is 180 mm. Total evaporation from a land surface is 540 mm. The proof snow cover is from November, 2nd till February, 9th, the height of a snow cover is from 7 to 42 centimeters (average - 19 centimeters). Number of days with a snow cover is 95-110. Depth of ground freezing is from 24 to 141 centimeters.
Dominating winds during the warm period has North-western direction, during the cold period – South-western direction. The most possible speeds of wind is 17 km/s - annually, 20-21 km/s - 1 time for 5-10 years, 22-23 km/s - for 15-20 years.
On calculations the temperature of the coldest five-days makes 22°С below zero, duration of the heating period is 191 days, at its average temperature 1,7°С below zero.
The maximum number of inhabitants of the regional centre 315,2 thousand persons - has been in January, 1 1994. Since then in a city process of reduction of a population lasts.
On September, 1 2007 the population of Chernigov is 298.383 persons.
Chernigov belongs to cities with rather high level of industrial development. The industrial complex of a city has weight in real sector of economic activities which essentially influences level and quality of life of the population of the city.
In a division of labor the city industry is presented by the enterprises of 10 areas - the food, light, chemical, pulp-and-paper and polygraphist industry, metallurgy and metal processing, manufacture of building materials, products from wood, manufacture and electric power and water distribution.
