CITY OF SEVASTOPOL UKRAINE

Sevastopol city big emblem of townSevastopol is a city of the state importance in Ukraine, the city-hero. It is located at the Black Sea coast of the Crimean peninsula. It has been laid under the decree of Russian empress Ekaterina II in 1783. It is the largest nonfreezing sea trading, fish port, the industrial, scientific and technical, recreational and cultural - historical center of Crimea. In Sevastopol the main bases of the Black Sea fleet of Russia and Naval Forces of Ukraine are located.

Coat of arms of Sevastopol has been authorized in 2000. In the right top part of the coat of arms on a silver field the medal “the Gold star” is represented. On the left bottom part of the coat of arms on azure field the silhouette of a monument “to the Flooded ships” of silver color is represented. It is composition join two fields with the laurel branch of the golden color that is symbolizing glory of defenders of Sevastopol.

Flag of Sevastopol is a red panel with the image of the coat of arms of the city in the center. It has been approved in 2000.

The city of Sevastopol is located in a southwest part of Crimea on the Gerakleyskiy peninsula. The general area of territory of the city makes 1079 square km; water areas of internal sea bays occupy about 216 square km.

The coast in area of Sevastopol is unique for Crimea due to a great number (more than 30) of convenient, well protected nonfreezing bays. Twisting coast of the longest Sevastopol bay cuts deep inland more than on eight kilometers in depth of the peninsula. Rocky capes are natural citadels. The Sevastopol bay is considered one of several the most convenient bays in the world.

Sevastopol flag of townThere are a number of reserved territories in Sevastopol are: The Cossack bay – general zoological, hydrological reserve of Ukrainian importance; Cape Fiolent and Cape Ayya are landscape reserves of nation-wide importance; Coastal aqua complex of the cape Fiolent and of the complex at reserve Hersonessky; Sarich-Laspinskiy coastal aqua complex - a hydrological nature memorial; Laspi Rocks - reserved natural boundary; The Ushakov beam - a botanical local nature memorial.

The climate is like subtropical climate of Southern coast of Crimea, and has the features in two microclimatic subzones: in foothills - rather soft, sea, moderate – continental; at southeast coast - moderate - continental with features of subtropical Mediterranean type.

The monthly average temperature of air within all year is positive. The coldest month is January (average temperature +1,3Ñ), the warmest is July (+23,2Ñ). The temperature of a superficial layer of water of the Black sea at coast of Sevastopol also is always higher than zero, and in July makes 22,2Ñ. Atmospheric precipitation within a year is from 280 till 400 mm/year. The driest month in a year is May.

In antiquity on the territory where the part of modern Sevastopol is located, the Greek colony Chersonese has been based by natives from Heraclea Pontica in V century B.C.; later it has been a part of the Roman and Byzantine empires.

Now Sevastopol (as well as the capital of Ukraine - Kiev) is a city of the central submission. It is not a part of Autonomous Republic of Crimea.

The present status of Sevastopol as parts of Ukraine is contended by a number of political movements of Crimea and Sevastopol they put forward slogans of returning of Sevastopol and Crimea a member of Russia. A number of political forces and figures of the Russian Federation, from the middle 1990 rendering political and financial support to Russian national organizations of Sevastopol and the city adhere to a similar position also.

The territory subordinated to Sevastopol is divided into 4 administrative areas. The structure of two of them (Gagarinsky and Leninsky) includes only city quarters, and another two (Balaklavsky and Nahimovsy) include also villages that are surrounding the city.

According to population census of Ukraine of 2001, the resident population of all territory subordinated to the Sevastopol city council made 377,2 thousand people, urban population - 358,1 thousand people, rural population - 21,4 thousand people.

The national structure of the population, according to All-Union population census of the USSR of 1989, was: Russian - 74,4 %, óêðàèíöû - 20,6 %, other 5 % were more than 26 nationalities - Byelorussians, Crimean Tatars, Jews, Armenians, Greeks, Germans, áîëãàðû, Moldavians, Poles, etc.

Sevastopol is the largest center of the fish- extractive and fish-processing industries. In 1964 on coast of the Cane bay the Sevastopol sea fish port, base for fishing fleet of the south of the country has been built. During Soviet time the turnover of goods of port exceeded 1 million tons a year; in 1993 it has fallen up to 349 thousand, but has again grown by 2003 above 3 million tons. In 2004 in the city 28 enterprises on catching and processing of fish worked. Tinned food factories produce millions cans a year, make thousands tons of dried, pickled and smoked fish.

Wine-growing and wine-making productions are the leading branch of the agricultural industry of the city. The area occupied with vineyards is about 8 thousand hectares. Champagne and sparkling wines are produced by “Cevastopolsky vinzavod”, vintage wines by “Inkermansky zavod of vintage wines”. Besides in the city suburbs vineyards firms are located.

In Sevastopol ship-repair and ship-building factories are, among them one of the largest enterprises of the Azov-Black Sea region with more than 200-years history - Open Society “Sevastopol sea factory” is.

In 2007 in Sevastopol 97 religious communities were, among them Ukrainian Orthodox Church - 43, Baptists - 10, Muslims - 7, Pentecostalism - 4, Jehovah’s Witnesses - 3, Seventh-day Adventist Church - 3, Ukrainian Greek catholic Church - 3, Christians of belief evangelical - 2, Jews - 2, Catholic church - 1 were.
